This course is based on materials developed by Richard Bullington-McGuire of The Obscure Organization intended to teach elementary school children programming, design, and math in an accessible and engaging way. It has been modified to be used within the Sugar Learning Platform on XO computers.
The first three deployments of this class were held as an after-school arts enrichment program at an Arlington, Virginia primary school, Campbell Elementary, from the fall of 2007 to the spring of 2008. Richard taught the first three sessions of the class and Obscure Organization volunteers helped in the classroom. These lesson plans have also been used in another class in the fall of 2008 Taylor Elementary School in Arlington, taught by Chris Vargas, with parent volunteers from Taylor.
The class is being taught in the Summer 2009 enrichment program of the Governor’s Career and Technical Academy in Arlington, where it will expand from a one week to a two week format. GCTAA Information and Communication Technology instructor Jeffrey Elkner will be the teacher, with assistance from other GCTAA staff and students.
